Review by Ansel Halliburton

Transkriptionen is a stunning album that showcases the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by the talented Bruno Leonardo Gelber. Gelber's skills as a pianist are on full display as he expertly translates Bach's compositions into a solo piano format. The pieces included on the album are some of Bach's most well-known works, such as the Goldberg Variations and the Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major. Gelber's interpretation of these pieces is both elegant and dynamic, bringing new life to Bach's timeless compositions. The album is a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast, as it offers a fresh perspective on some of the most beloved pieces in the genre. Transkriptionen is a masterful album that showcases both Bach's brilliance and Gelber's talent as a pianist.

About J S Bach, Bruno Leonardo Gelber

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .

Perhaps the greatest left hand of any pianist - certainly in the conversation with Rachmaninoff and Horowitz. But Gelber's sonority is unique - not pointed like Sergei and Vladimir, perhaps a bit like Berman - but Gelber was a much more consistent pianist than Berman. In his prime, one could easily argue that Gelber's Rachmaninoff 3rd and Liszt Sonata are at the top - even superior to Horowitz. And his Brahms Piano Sonata No. 3 is by far the tops. In other words, a complete pianist.

This arrangement is more pianistic than the Kempff arrangement. The Siloti one is quite good too, but not as octave-heavy...

Brilliant! Thanks for this post! I heard this unique version of the Prelude BWV 1006 (and Cantate BWV 29) performed by Bruno Leonardo at an Amsterdam Concertgebouw recital in the mid 1970's. It has more power and better preserves Bach's original than the Rachmaninoff version.
