Review by KJ Gardner Singleton

The album Mercedes Ladies by Skyhooks is a classic example of Australian rock music from the 1970s. The band's third studio album, it features 10 tracks of high-energy rock with a touch of glam and punk. The album's title track, "Mercedes Ladies," is a catchy anthem about the women who drive expensive cars and live life on their own terms. Other standout tracks include "All My Friends Are Getting Married," a tongue-in-cheek take on the pressures of settling down, and "Million Dollar Riff," a fast-paced rocker with a killer guitar riff. The album's production is raw and gritty, giving it an authentic feel that captures the essence of the era. Mercedes Ladies is a must-listen for fans of classic Aussie rock and anyone looking for a dose of high-octane energy.

About Skyhooks

Skyhooks were an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in March 1973 by Greg Macainsh on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Imants "Freddie" Strauks on drums. They were soon joined by Bob "Bongo" Starkie on guitar and backing vocals, and Red Symons on guitar, vocals and keyboards; Graeme "Shirley" Strachan became lead vocalist in March 1974. Described as a glam rock band, because of flamboyant costumes and make-up, Skyhooks addressed issues including buying drugs in "Carlton (Lygon Street Limbo)

First time I saw Skyhooks they were the backup band for Matt Taylor's release of his Brisbane To Beechworth album at the Wangaratta Town Hall.
We were all pretty stoned and we were suddenly met with the full force of the original Skyhooks from before they had to 'tone it down a bit' for the mainstream.
I still remember the about 10 minute drum solo that still echoes in my head.

The most gosh awful band of hundreds I've seen live. Had to check back 4 decades later. Yep, they still suck.

I went to one of these first reunion shows, in Melbourne at Festival Hall, this looks like it might be from those shows. OMG I was so excited because I was too young to see them at pubs etc when they first appeared but I was just besotted with them.
I still love them! But now, as an older person and professional musician I get to rewatch, re-admire and understand better the amazing musicianship of each member of this quintet that was summed into the brilliant music (and theatre of this band).

Another bonus of being older and a musician is that I can have my own private and personal experience and greater appreciation through learning how to play Skyhooks songs. Here is my acoustic version of the Skyhooks song, Carlton. I hope you enjoy it! @0aEA
