Review by I Shu Weng

Dirty Washing, the latest album by Vivien Goldman, is a refreshing and powerful collection of tracks that explore themes of love, loss, and social justice. The album showcases Goldman's unique blend of reggae, punk, and pop sensibilities, and features a range of guest musicians and collaborators, including members of The Slits, The Raincoats, and Chaka Khan.

From the opening track "I Have a Voice," which features a driving reggae beat and Goldman's soaring vocals, to the closing track "Private Armies," a powerful meditation on the dangers of corporate power and militarization, Dirty Washing is an album that demands attention and engagement from the listener.

Throughout the album, Goldman's lyrics are sharp and incisive, tackling issues such as police brutality, gentrification, and the refugee crisis with a potent mix of anger and empathy. Tracks like "Launderette," a scathing critique of the gendered nature of domestic labor, and "Eden," a haunting meditation on the destruction of the natural world, showcase Goldman's ability to combine political commentary with poetic imagery and emotional resonance.

Notes

  • Recorded at The Manor (A) and Berry Street (B).
  • Allegedly this single by music journalist Vivien Goldman was recorded when "PiL snuck her into the Manor (studios)" during The Flowers Of Romance sessions in late 1980, with PiL also reportedly paying for most of the recording costs. It seems this is how Lydon earned his co-producer credit.
  • Steve New (aka Shooz) plays "drum bits" on the A which was presumably recorded at the same time as PiL's 'Pied Piper' which appeared on the Machines compilation.
  • Private Armies Dub taken from The New Age Steppers LP.
  • This is the same as the UK 7" with the addition of the "PA Dub" track on the B.

This always came to me as a track by the New Age Steppers featuring Ari Up on vocals. Cool to discover this other version. Certainly if I'd come up in the vinyl era, I would have known about this song, which I would guess provided the backing for Ari's version.

Well, in my town, punks/goths got hassled by jocks, metalheads, and often prying constabulary.
